By the time I made it back home, Zara had made it back. I didn’t realize how late it had gotten until I noticed her fully dressed sitting on the couch. We were supposed to go to her favorite restaurant at six. I checked the time on my Rolex and saw that it was a little after ten. If I didn’t say anything, that was going to lead to an argument, but I was in no mood to be playing fifty questions with her ass right now.

“I’m sorry I’m late,” I apologized as calmly as I could.

“Where have you been? You couldn’t call me and let me know that something had come up? First you harass me about going to dinner with you, and then you don’t even show up! I sat at the restaurant for a damn hour and a half waiting for you.”

“I don’t have time for this, Z. I’m sorry, aight?”

She stood and stormed over to me. “Where have you been?”

“Handling some business.”

“What kind of business?”

Instead of lying to her, I changed the subject. “Why don’t we get away for a while? We can go anywhere you want to go. Get us some one on one time in away from the world.”

She looked my entire frame over slowly before shaking her head. Zara took a step back, hands lifted, as if she knew something was wrong.

“What did you do, Cayden?”

Chuckling nervously, I shook my head. “Nothing, bae.”

“You’re lying.” She smiled, but there was nothing happy about this moment. “I don’t know what you did that was so important that you had to blow off dinner with me, but I hope it was worth it.”

“Zara…” I called out, but she ignored me.

I didn’t even have the energy to go after her and fight. Instead, I headed right back out the house. With no true destination in mind, I drove back to the hood and went to one of my favorite bars. Wasn’t shit for me to do at this point but drink. One of my oldest friends was dead, and it was my fault. I didn’t kill him myself, but I put him right in the line of a volatile ass bitch’s fire. A volatile ass bitch who was pregnant with my baby.

That crazy act was cute until shit got real.

Now she was dead.

Which meant my baby was as well.

This time, I wasn’t able to toss that thought to the back of my mind. This time, that thought had me quickly opening the door to vomit. I didn’t want anything to do with the baby, but I didn’t want my firstborn to die either. My head instantly started swirling as my heart started palpitating. I sat back in my seat, pulling in deep breaths as I felt faint. All this to keep a woman who didn’t even fucking want to be kept.
